What is Starter Solenoid?
The starter motor and solenoid set is made up of two components: The first is a cylindrical piece solenoid and the second is a motor. The solenoid is an electromagnetic switch that works on the principle of electromagnetism. It consists of a coil, fixed housing, and movable contacts.
Contacts are used for connecting input and output terminals and the magnetic coil controls the connections and disconnections between the contacts. The magnetic coil is designed to work with low voltage and low current, while the contacts are made to handle high current.
When power is supplied to the starter’s magnetic coil, the contacts close, and a connection is made but when the power supply is removed, the contacts disconnect. A three-pole or three-terminal solenoid starter has three terminals – the input terminal, the ‘S’ terminal, and the output terminal.
The output terminal is already connected to the starter motor, so we only need to use the input and S terminals for the actual connection.
What is Starter Motor?
The starter motor is the component that physically turns to start the engine. It’s a DC motor and is made to handle high levels of current. Typically, starter motors in vehicles are designed to work with either 24V or 12V DC power. The positive terminal of the motor is connected to the output terminal of the solenoid, while the negative terminal is connected to the motor’s body. The neutral terminal should be connected to the chassis ground. In the wiring diagram, you can see all the terminals of the motor and solenoid clearly labeled.

Now you can understand the easy wiring diagram of the Starter Solenoid. A starter solenoid has three terminals, one pin-type terminal, and two bolt-type terminals. Contact design may be different in the case of another maker.
The small pin-shaped terminal is referred to as the “S” terminal. This terminal is connected to the ignition switch circuit also known as the starter solenoid control wire. This circuit allows to flow of current from the ignition switch to the starter solenoid.
The current first travels through the fuse to the neutral safety switch, after that to the starter relay, and finally reaches the starter solenoid.
The starter solenoid has two terminals contact, one of which is the input terminal. This is where the positive power source from the battery enters the solenoid. The other thicker terminal is the output terminal, which leads to the starter motor assembly.
When you turn on the ignition switch key by rotation, the current start flowing from the switch to the starter fuse, then to the neutral safety or clutch pedal safety switch, and then finally to the starter relay located in the fusebox. At last, the current reaches the “S” terminal of the starter solenoid in the Starter Solenoid Wiring Diagram.
When the starter relay is activated, it sends power to the “S” terminal of the solenoid. Once the “S” terminal receives the current, it pulls the plunger inside the solenoid, which makes a connection between the two terminals contact.
This allows the current to flow directly from the battery to the starter motor assembly. By making a wiring connection in this way we can connect the solenoid to the motor starter.
